VC Backed IDEs
So I was as excited about Zed as other developers. I initially downloaded it, found it didn't do what I wanted, and left. And then a year or so later I came back after 1.0 and liked what I saw! It had good theming, some plugins I wanted, and was way faster than my VSCode at the time. They had baked in some AI features that I didn't really use but thought "whatever", the editor was mostly complete for what I wanted. Then came some news about a VC backed funding of the IDE, which I thought fine. Not great, but the IDE is still open source so it should be good. And now we've seen the development team go into creating their own VCS as one of the things the zed team provides. This is getting to be a little much for me. Why does my text editor need funding to offer an AI service and develop their own VCS? What does Zed get out of this? More money because developers need on-going jobs, etc sure.
Hank Hill Inspiration
While my kids are under 1 I've started watching King of the Hill for the first time, and it's been wonderful to see a man struggle with how he was raised and the way it shapes your thinking as a dad. I also grew up in suburban Texas so it hits home in a very real way. Breezing past a lot of context, Hank's commitment to good customer service because its just part of being a good person was a little inspiring to me. And he also threatens to kick folks' asses for breaking what he sees as a shared respect between people. And I thought huh, that kind of reminds me of why I'm doing all of this development in the first place. I feel like my usage of a text editor is being used to make someone else a lot of $$$. Granted, that's also blown way out of proportion, but what are you gonna do?
Well
Write my own text editor and make a promise to the community, I'll maintain this software as long as I can because I think it is worthwhile. I won't add features that don't belong (like AI and telemetry). I won't make it closed source or directly profit off of it (as if anyone would offer me money for this lol). I promise to provide you with a good honest service from strickland propane Edward Champion. And if I break these promises, you can come kick my ass. I'm serious too, its now in the LICENSE. Some times when this rug pull happens you feel frustrated and betrayed and like your time has been wasted. So come kick my ass if you use this software and I ruin it. I don't know if anyone else actually uses this silly thing, but to the one person who does, this is what you get out of it.
